Content Inside: Ajax using XMLHttpRequest and Struts Frank W. Zammetti About five years ago I worked on a web app project where one of the primary requirements was that it should look, work and feel like a Windows-based fat client. Now, ignoring the question of why it was not in fact done as a Windows-based fat client in the first place, that can be a rather tough requirement in the world of web development, certainly it was five years ago when not very many examples of such a thing existed. As a result of a number of proof-of-concepts, I stumbled upon some techniques for doing things that were at the time rather atypical approaches to web development. The end result was an application that, to this day, many people cannot even tell is web-based, aside from the fact that you access it with a browser! Little did I know that only a few years

Content Inside: Using Ajax with PHP and Sajax How the Simple Ajax Toolkit can integrate your server-side PHP with JavaScript Skill Level: Intermediate Tyler Anderson (tyleranderson5@yahoo.com) Freelance Writer Stexar Corp. 18 Oct 2005 For years, the goal of creating a truly responsive Web application was hampered by one simple fact of Web development: To change the information on part of a page, a user must reload the entire page. Not anymore. Thanks to asynchronous JavaScript and XML (Ajax), we can now request new content from the server and change just part of a page. This tutorial explains how to use Ajax with PHP and introduces the Simple Ajax Toolkit (Sajax), a tool written in PHP that lets you integrate server-side PHP with JavaScript that makes this work. Section 1. Before you start This tutorial is for those interested in developing rich Web applications that dynamically update content using asynchronous JavaScript and XML (Ajax) with PHP, without having to

Content Inside: Web Application Solutions: A Designers Guide Overview As the Web continues to extend its reach into our daily lives, an increasing number of our interactions will happen online. The practical implication of this for interface designers is lots of Web application projects that cover everything from filing taxes to sharing photos. "The fundamental purpose of Web applications is to facilitate the completion of one or more tasks" [Bob Baxley 1]. But depending on the type and complexity of the tasks involved, different technical solutions may be better suited to enable the specific interactions each product requires. Flash, Java applets, DHTML, Active X, Smart Clients, Java Web Start, SVG-- what do you choose and why? What types of interactivity and visual presentation does each technology enable? What does each limit? As Web application interface designers, these are questions we encounter time and time again. As a result, we decided to document what weve learned

(Since I had instructed it not to listen to strangers, the computer wasnt receptive to this command.) If youre like me, your first thought would be "how silly" or "how funny"--but this is a mistake. Our educated and modeled brains have learned how to work with computers to a certain degree. People are being educated to accommodate computers, to compensate for the lack of ability of computers to understand humans. (On the other hand, humans cant accommodate very well themselves, but thats another story.) This little story is relevant to the way people instinctively work with computers. In an ideal world, that spoken command should have been enough to have the computer please my cousin. The ability of technology to be user-friendly has evolved very much in the past

Content Inside: Advanced ASP.NET 2.0 and ASP.NET AJAX with Jeff Prosise ASP.NET 2.0 is chock full of new features, from master pages and data source controls to membership, role management, and profile services. Yet just beneath the surface are numerous features such as expression builders, virtual path providers, and asynchronous pages that many developers have never even heard of, much less utilized. These features are augmented by ASP.NET AJAX, the new AJAX framework created by the same team that produced ASP.NET. Take your ASP.NET expertise to the next level by learning about key (and often undocumented) ASP.NET extensibility points and programming models, and by learning how to add AJAX magic to your Web apps. Day 1 focuses on ASP.NET 2.0 itself, with an emphasis on building highly scalable, secure applications. Highlights include writing custom providers to integrate ASP.NETs membership and role management services with existing membership and roles databases; learning how to hack ASP.NET
